Goethe: Faust

  IV.12 Spaziergang (A promenade)

This is the only scene, where Mephistopheles is really upset and turns into a human being of flesh and blood. Margaret showed the box of jewellery to her mother, who "smelled" something was not quite in order with this box. She calls the priest, who congratulates her to have him come, takes the box and takes it to the goods of the church. Only the church is an institution that can take in goods that do not belong to her. Faust orders Mephistopheles to organise new jewels that are even more beautiful that the first ones.
