Exercise: Goethe, Faust

  V. Some verses

20) ... Was anders suche zu beginnen ...

  FAUST:   FAUST.
Was anders suche zu beginnen
Des Chaos wunderlicher Sohn!
Seek something else to undertake,
You, Chaos' odd, fantastic son!

This is another quote that many people use, even though quite often far from this context. It is easy to imagine the situation people use it. The context we have here is the following: Mephistopheles complains that he was not able to reduce everything to its initial state, the nothing. After everything he has tried to achieve his goal, life is always reborn. It is impossible for him to destroy the entity and now he tries to destroy separate parts. Then Faust tells him that it would be more valuable to do something else. He calls him the son of chaos, because before God created, the earth was chaos.
