There are grammar books that see the reflexive pronoun only as an object (direct or indirect) that refers to the subject of the phrase.

direct object  
  Ich wasche mich.
Wen wasche ich?
Mich.		 I wash myself.
Whom do I wash?
Myself.

indirect object  
  Ich wasche mir die Füße.
Wem wasche ich die Füße?
Mir.		 I wash myself the feet.
Whom do I wash the feet?
Myself.
