is a preposition that is used quite rarely.
Oberhalb
means that
something is above something else but not
necessarily in vertical sense.
Oberhalb des
Dorfes sah man von weitem die Feuer. = You could see the
fire form far awaysabove
the village.
This sentence
actually means that there is something higher
behind the village (a mountain or something)
where the fire is, and the fire can be seen
above the village.
Über dem Dorf
sah man die Feuer. = You could see the
fire over the village.
This sentence would
mean that the fire is over the village in
a vertical meaning, the fire might be in the
sky above the village or just in the air over
the village. Hopefully this doesn't happen
to often.
