Goethe: Faust

  IV.26 Kerker (Prison)

Faust tries to save Margaret. This is not possible anymore, because Margaret has become mad and hardly understands, what he says to her. When Mephistopheles appears everything is absolutely lost, because now Faust makes her shrink from him. Dying she says:

  MARGARETE:   MARGARET.
Dein bin ich, Vater! Rette mich!
Ihr Engel! Ihr heiligen Scharen,
Lagert euch umher, mich zu bewahren!
Heinrich! Mir graut's vor dir.
Thine am I, Father! Rescue me!
Ye angels! Ye heavenly hosts! Appear,
Encamp about and guard me here!
Henry! I shrink from you!

Upon this Henry! I shrink from you! Her terror of Mephistopheles is expressed in the two phrases as follows:

MEPHISTOPHELES: MEPHISTOPHELES
Sie ist gerichtet!   She is judged!
STIMME (von oben):   VOICE [from above]:
  Ist gerettet!   She is saved!

Her denying Mephistopheles saves her in the end.
