  31.5.2.1 Use as attributive adjective (with definite article)

When using a superlative as attributive adjective (meaning that it has the position of an adjective before the noun that is described by the adjective) the definite articel (der/die/das) ist to be used.

  Some examples  
Er ist der Beste von allen.
  = He is the best of them all.
  Das war das Beste, was mir passieren konnte.
  = This was the best that could happen to me.
